Yesterday we headed up to visit some old stomping grounds I haven’t seen in about 4 years.
First drove up to Whitefish Point and drove down Wildcat Rd. This road I have taken many times in the past knowing that there are areas that Lake Superior has been reclaiming with sand drifts. Well, in the past 4 years she has done a good job, there is one stretch that I knew would be deep with sand, but I had no idea of just how much. There was just no way I wanted to take the chance of getting stuck, my tires are getting pretty warn, so we had to turn around and back track back to Paradise and head west from there. This wasn’t at all a bad thing, we were able to stop at a spot I found many years ago and quite possible my favorite location I have ever seen or been to, Cabin Lake.
After enjoying Cabin Lake for a bit, we headed off toward Grand Marais via Deer Park. I don’t think I’ll be taking the road from Deer Park to Grand Marais until spring…it was so f’ing wash boarded. Anyway, made it to Grand Marais. Damn it’s nice to see that little town and harbor again. We eat lunch at Lake Superior Brewing Co., best Whitefish (that’s with a Capital W, not just any whitefish the REAL Whitefish) anywhere, fresh off the boat.
After having lunch, headed out to Hurricane River to walk along the shore of shipwecks and to Au Sable Lighthouse, about a 5 mile round trip walk on the shore of beautiful Lake Superior. Then headed home.
Miles and miles of wilderness shoreline.
