Daytrip to Munising – Updated 08.20.14

Dawn and I were both needing a UP/Lake Superior fix, so Sunday we headed up to the Munising area. Just a quick daytrip. Before leaving I looked at Google Maps to check out an area I had never been to see if we could get to the lake shore. The map looked promising, but I still didn’t know for sure if we could reach the shore or not. We headed out early Sunday morning and made a bee line for Munising, this way we could spend as much time as possible there, and take a different back road route home.

Soon as we arrived in Munising we headed for a small spot I have always stopped at to look for agates. Well, to our surprise there wasn’t much of a beach due to the Big Lake being much higher than previous years. We let the dogs run a bit, found a couple stones and headed off for the location I eyeballed on the map.

We found the shore. Wow, all I can say is wow, what a wonderful area to discover. It seems like this spot may be only known by locals because I haven’t been able to find anything about it on the web, nothing. Anyway, the shore is mostly sandstone with large boulders here and there on the opposite side of the bay facing Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore. There are rustic campsites far spaced, as in hundreds of feet, along the shore line. When we were there we only saw a couple other people, and that was only in passing, all the other time we were alone to enjoy another wonder of the UP and Lake Superior. We could have stayed there all day just taking it all in, so we only walked a little ways down the shore, but this is a MUST come back to spot and spend hours.

After our little exploring, we headed back to town to get gassed up and stop at a couple stores. We then headed for an early dinner at the Brownstone Inn. After dinner we headed home on some roads I’ve never been on that followed the Sturgeon River south. Nice drive!

’til Next Time,
