Interesting Weekend

What a weekend, from Autumn colors to strong storms and power outages.

Friday I headed into the Keweenaw to check the colors out. In most areas there, they are at just about peak color. I drove straight up to Copper Harbor then down along the coast. Didn’t go up to Brockway Mountain due to way to busy with tourons. I took a few nice photos, and a video I quite like. Then headed home.
That evening, Friday, some thunder storms came rolling through… Yikes! These storms were the strongest I’ve ever seen in person. Also, most the area lost power, mine was out until Sunday morning. I lost two large trees out by the road, but that’s quite minor compared to what happened in L’Anse… They got hammered on.
Saturday I thought I might as well go out and about, no power at the house. Well, as I drove out and down my road that’s where the mess started… downed trees everywhere. I counted nine trees in just under a mile on my road and two snapped power poles. Once I got into L’Anse, holyshit! Must have been hundreds of trees either up-rooted or snapped in half, and they were everywhere, along with downed power lines. I continued on up to Big Erick’s bridge and then out Black Creek Rd and drove around on some two-tracks for a while. Then came home to a still powerless house.
Today, Sunday, I got woke up to a bright light in my eyes, it was the ceiling light. I have power again. Just before sunrise, I drove out my road to see what had been done, not much. The trees are still across the road, but there was two power service trucks parked. A little later I made a quick run to the hardware store, the trees are still down and the trucks are still there, but no-one working yet. There has been one of the snapped power pole replaced, but lines are still hanging very low.
Also this weekend, a couple of “friends” came to L’Anse to see the colors and stuff. They said they’d be getting a hold of me, yeah right. They called once where to go in the keweenaw and they would be getting a hold of me later. Nope. It’s is now 12:30 Sunday Afternoon and not a word. Fuck Them.

I have quite a few photos, some I’m photos now, others I still need to process them and then post later.

Autumn Colors

The Autumn colors are really kicking in. Some areas are just about at peak, while others are mostly green still.
Friday I drove up Huron Bay-Peshekee Rd knowing the colors would be popping there. I made my first stop for a couple photos and Shit! I forgot a SD card for my camera, that really sucked, and I wasn’t about to drive all the way back home to get one. I did have my drone and my cellphone, but I hate using a cellphone for proper photos, so I mostly just used the drone. I stopped at Haypress Falls to fly down into the area to see the falls, as it is, it’s quite difficult to see these falls without some major bushwhacking. I was pretty nervous  while flying. Lots of trees, rocks and I had to fly downward, so it was a little scary.
After Haypress, I continued north, flew the drone a couple more times for photos and then home. It was a full day.
Sunday I headed down Sidnaw and drove up to the Sturgeon River. I could fly the drone how I wanted due to heavy winds, but I still got some good stuff.
After Sturgeon River, I drove back south and over to Kenton and north on Forest Service Road 16, and then up to Pike Lake Road. Took some photos at Pike Lake, few the drone and headed toward home via Houghton. I was going to stop and get something to eat in Houghton, but every place I went by was packed, even the fast food joints had very long lines, so I just drove home.

Work and Photos

Well, once again I’ve missed posting things… Damnit.

Let’s go in order of the title.
Work – Today I posted an RFQ for our website at work (Website Design & Development Request for Qualification). This has always been my job. I’m quite upset about this and have asked my boss why, but the only answer I ever get is, “I don’t know the reason”. I have been kept completely out of the loop, told or asked nothing. At this point, I don’t know what the fuck to do. Should I make an appointment with our chairperson? Last time I tried talking with my bosses boss, I just got pushed up. I have, and have had, a website started since the first of the year and have asked my boss to see what people think, but once again, nothing. No input what so ever. I understand I will be keeping my job to maintain the site, but I know the damn thing inside and out, so who better to make another one. Anyway, I’m quite distraught about this.
Photos – I have a few to being uploaded for this post, photos and videos, from the past week or so.

Sunset

Last night I had a hunch the sunset would be good, one because there were some clouds, and two, the smoke from forest fires in the western states.  I was not disappointed.  There was even a small storm brewing to the south west that I was aware of until I took the drone up and saw it.

Hummingbirds and Sunsets

Not much has been happening, just work mainly. The other day I tried taking a slow motion video of some Hummingbirds with the drone. I set the drone up on the front deck railing, went back in the house and sat there triggering the drone to record. After splicing and merging all the clips, I ended up with about 30 seconds in real time footage, but taken in 1080p at 240 FPS, it lasts 6 minutes. I’ll have to try this again sometime.
I also took a few different sunset photos with the drone flying up from the house. The first one is about 15 minutes before the second. Both photos are looking across the road from my place. The creek is Six Mile Creek and most the land is Six Mile Creek Preserve, part of the Keweenaw Land Trust. The land around the preserve is DNR land.

Just after landing the drone rain started falling.

Sturgeon River With The Drone

Needed to get out of the house yesterday, even if it was hotter than hell outside.  I headed out to a couple spots that I thought would be good to fly the drone and get some photos, and for the most part they were.
First stop was out Old US-41 near Alberta where there’s an old camel back bridge that’s no longer in use.  I got some pretty good photos of the bridge there.  Once home, I was amazed at the detail the little camera on the drone had once zoomed in in Lightroom.
My next stop was near the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area, I knew of a couple good spots to fly along the river there.  I stopped at the first location, flew up and down the river for awhile, and got some video footage.  By the time I was finished there, it was getting way too hot to make a stop at the other spot which is right down the road.  I’ll be coming back here during autumn colors, it should be really nice with the drone.
I then headed home.

The first group of photos is from the camel back bridge on Old US-41.
The videos are from the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area.
And lastly, a photo from the other day looking out at Keweenaw Bay which is a 3×3 panorama photo.

A Little Drive About

Yesterday, Saturday, I had plans to check out the snow along one of my favorite rivers, well, it didn’t happen. We, Eli and I, headed out to the Slate River to hike up the river and get some photos of all the snow. Once we got there, Eli decided he didn’t want to go into the snow, though I can’t really blame him, it was quite deep and he’s getting up there in age. Also I’m not sure how I would have done in the snow with my leg issues. So it was probably for the best.
So, from the Slate River I headed up to Big Erik’s Bridge and the Huron River. Too much snow there to be able to hike back along the river.
With it still being early in the day, I thought a drive out to Herman and the Herman Nestoria Road, the usually get pounded with snow and is really pretty. Well, that wasn’t the case. They did have quite a bit of snow, but I think the winds had knocked all the snow off the trees, so the drive was just that, a drive through the woods. I didn’t even take a single photo through there.
After getting back to about half way between Herman and L’Anse, I thought, what the hell, I’ll take the loop from Indian Rd then loop back to where we started, the Slate River. I missed the turn, or just didn’t see it, off of Sliver Rd that I had taken before, so continued. Oddly enough, the road I was on ended up looping back to Arvon Rd, then back down to the Slate River. Roads change in the winter, you can never tell which ones will be plowed, and as it turns out, I took the correct one.
After that, we headed back home.
I was still good to get out of the house, I needed it.

Today will be a day of some ice and snow cleanup before it gets colder this afternoon and turns everything into concrete. Then comes the snow again, they’re calling for 6-8 inches for my location. After that’s done, nothing. I’ll be relaxing and maybe watch a movie if I can find one I might like.

Short Drive

I couldn’t do it, I just couldn’t stay at the house today, so I grabbed Eli and we went for a quick drive. Seeing I didn’t have much snow here at the house, I headed up Menge Creek Rd past my driveway where they stop plowing during winter. Well, much to my surprise, there is much more snow out and up that way, much more. I started to wonder if I would make it up the steep hills with the snow ruts and ice. Ha, I didn’t even spin a tire. I was dragging bottom in a few areas where the snow ruts were deep and the middle was still deep, but all went well. It was like driving a slot car because the snow ruts were so deep and rock hard from the thawing and freezing again.
I then just went along Plains Rd, not to be confused with Baraga Plains Rd, to M-28 and on home.
