How many zeros in a billion?

This is too true to be funny…

The next time you hear a politician use the word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A billion seconds ago it was 1959
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain…
let’s take a look at New Orleans ….
It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.
Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for 250 BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans .. Interesting number…

What does it mean?
Well… if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child) you each get $516,528.
Or… if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
Or… if you are a family of four…your family gets $2,066,012.

Imagine, now $700 billion bailing out banks in the US .
That’s enough to fund complete medical care for every man, woman and child currently alive in the US for 11 years!!
50 billion to bail out the auto industry???
Washington , D.C. & Ottawa ON.

Moon

First off, I’d like to point to a comment made about the lockdown at Wasilla High yesterday. Link to comment. It points out some more of the confusion that went on. Thanks Jamie. Also, I’d like to say that I do not think this was linked to Palin at all, just that because of her national coverage, this may make it to the national news and put Wasilla in a bad light.
Oh, and yes, Maddie is a senior at Wasilla High.

Today’s stuff 🙂
Jan and I went out for a drive today, out to Wolverine Rd. Another wonderful sunny day. It seems as though the sunny days way out number the cloudy ones, good thing eh.

Not much really to talk about so on to a couple photos. I do have more photos from today, just lazy.

Perigee Moon January 10, 2009

What is a Perigee Moon?
From NASA.gov:
“Johannes Kepler explained the phenomenon 400 years ago. The Moon’s orbit around Earth is not a circle; it is an ellipse, with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other. Astronomers call the point of closest approach “perigee,” and that is where the Moon will be this weekend.

Perigee full Moons come along once or twice a year. 2008 ended with one and now 2009 is beginning with another. It’s the best kind of déjà vu for people who love the magic of a moonlit landscape.”

Grooved Roads and Moose

So the other day a large road grader came up our road scraping the surface down. I saw something off the back of the grader that had large arms that point down to the road. Now let me first say that our road, and most back / side roads are covered in snow / ice and have been for quite some time. Little did I know the grader also cuts grooves down the road surface, similar to what you see on pavement on known icy spots. It really is quite cool, the surface of the road has much more grip to it now.

We had a different moose family come through our property today. There was mom and 2 youngin’s instead of the mom and her 1 young that come through most the time. They hung around for quite a long time munching on branches and bushes.

Here are some pics of the youngins, mom was always off in the distance.

Lockdown

There was a bomb threat at Wasilla High School today. There’s good and bad news going along with this. First the good, because it’s the shortest part.
Two links to the story.
Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman – Notes with “bomb” prompted lockdown at Wasilla high
Anchorage Daily News – No bomb found at Wasilla High after threat
Read the comments on the links, you’ll see some pissed off people, and some that are not.

The Good:
The school system has a call system in place where they call and email the parents incase of any happenings, like closings, bombs and such. That’s the good news.

The Bad:
From what we heard on the scanner and read on line, this was one fucked up lock down and evacuation. Some wonder why there was even school today, the first letter was found last night. then there are those that wonder why the students were kept in thier classrooms instead of getting them out of the building. On the scanner it reallys sounded as if the police, or who ever, didn’t know what the fuck was going on. They didn’t know where or when the kids were boarding the busses. They didn’t know where the busses were taking the kids. They didn’t know when or if the kids were getting a bus trip home, it turns out NO. The kids were sent out without getting thier coats and suff, well, that’s just fucking stupid, it’s been well below zero for sometime now, and sending them out without coats is completely irresponsible. It really did seem as though the right hand didn’t know what the left was doing, at least from what I heard on the scanner.

Ya know, I really can’t help but think this wouldn’t have happened if Palin, the no longer liked by many locals governor, wouldn’t have put her face in the national public seen. People know that anything that happens in Wasilla will be on the national news, in time. And you can thank her for that. She doesn’t do shit for this state since her vice-pres run. I use to like her, no longer.

One more thing. If it wasn’t for Bush (The Speaking Chimp, of is that chump) inciting terror on all those that don’t believe as him, this may have been just pushed off as just another school prank.

No matter what, all is good now.

Just Stuff

Warmer, a lot warmer than the past week, we got up to a high of 5* above zero yesterday. Now that might not sound very warm, but it is an increase of 20 to 30 degrees. And, of course the sun was out. I don’t remember ever seeing so many days with sunny skies in the winter, it really is nice. So anyway, I needed to do a bit of grocery shopping Monday. Walking from the Jeep to the store, it really did feel a lot warmer, almost spring like.

Then, today we went to Anchorage and as we got there the ice fog started rolling in. No photos but this one that I thought was kinda cool looking.

Anyone for some hoarfrost basketball? On the basketball hoop, that is not snow, it is frost, hoarfrost.

Denali (The Great One)

Today we decided to head up to Talkeetna and Denali (Mount McKinley). The temp was about -30 below zero with crystal clear skies. We really could not have pick a much better day to head up there.

Denali (“The Great One”) is the highest mountain peak in North America, at a height of approximately 20,320 feet. Here is a good Wikipedia link about Denali

Talkeetna is a nice small town, mostly of log buildings. Most the shops were closed, off season. We did stop at Latitude 62 for a burger, was a dam good burger at that. Very friendly people setting at the bar and working.

This is going to be a big post, again, with 17 photos.

These first 5 are from a pull-off just south of Talkeenta

In Talkeetna there is a really nice park that is on the Susitna River. Took a walk down to the river and got these 7 shots.
