Christmas Eve Day Drive

Jan and I finally had a chance to go for a drive today. I took her out to a few of the places I’ve been lately, Matanuska River access by Palmer, Maud Rd. area and up into Buffalo Mine area. The sun was out, but it had a funny tinge to it and some clouds were making their way in. I think this was from a storm front on it’s way in from the west. Bethel has a Blizzard Warning out and I think that is what is on it’s way, though I don’t think we’ll any big storm, really no storm at all, just maybe a couple inches of snow.
Did get a few photos though, not the greatest, but got some none the less.

We also saw our first bull moose today. Just as we were driving back down from Buffalo Mine area, I saw something in the corner of my eye, and sure enough, a bull moose. He was just a young one, but still a bull. The pics of him turned out kind of crappy also. Oh well, still got him!

On to the photos. Speaking of which, I’m thinking of building a seperate photo album that is a bit more organized. I’ll still post them here, but also there.

Anyway …

Snowzilla

Big news around Anchorage, the Snowzilla controversy.
Snowzilla is a two story tall snowman built the past few years by one family.

Winter Solstice, Continued

It was a gorgeous day, nice and sunny with a few wispy clouds. With the sun at such a low level on the horizon, it makes for some marvelous colors.

I just wish Jan could have been with me to enjoy this day to. It seems we aren’t able to spend much real time together lately, either she has to work or something else comes up. 🙁

Also, I’d like to wave Hello to all the British Expats visitors.

Anyway, I took heaps of photos today, so this is going to be a big one.

The following 8 shots were taken at about noon today down on the Matanuska River just outside of Palmer.

Photos, Photos, and more Photos

Went out again today because it was just way too nice to stay in. I took a lot of pictures today. I just wish they could show just how beautiful it really is here. It really is breathtaking.
I’m only going to post a few at a time, I have 17 that I have ready, so that the posts wont be too large.

The only way this day could have been better is if Jan could have been with me. She had to work. 🙁

Out to the Hay Flats

Woke up this morning to a cool and invigerating -12.8*F with clear skies and a full moon. I knew it would be a wonderful day to get out and let the dogs run a bit, so we headed out to the Palmer Hay Flats. I think by the time we got there we had reached our high temp for the day at -1.5*F. I snapped the first photo just before a wave of freezing fog rolled in from the inlet. I do think that the fog made for some really dramatic photo’s.

The pictures from today.

Colony Christmas Festival

Today we headed over to Palmer for their Christmas thingy. It was only the first day of the festival and we were only able to see the craft exbits, but it was still nice to be in Palmer rather than Wasilla. Palmer just feels more like a town and is so much prettier than Wasilla. Don’t get me wrong, Wasilla is nice, just too busy for my taste and no town feeling. Now the crafts, another thing, it was really nice to see that ALL the items there were from the Palmer area, unlike other shows I have been to that have items from all over the place including China. We also used Palmer’s post office to mail off our Christmas stuff, very freindly service, unlike Harbor Springs post office.

Palmer Water Tower with moon. Didn’t turn out the way I had hoped, but what the hell.

The following are not from Alaska, as some of you may notice, but of the Houghton MI lift bridge dedicated to Seannie
