A Bit Breezy

Been breezy today, well, I guess a little more then breezy.windy. I’ve seen worst along Lake Superior, but this is still a good one. Power was out at the house when I woke up this morning, about 3:10am, and was still off when I left for work about 6:15am. Not sure when it came back on. The biggest problem with this wind is the dust from the glaciers, makes for some nasty air to breath. Oh, and ever worst, the leaves are mostly gone off the trees. All that wonderful color gone.bummer.

Following is the latest warning from the National Weather Service.

WarningDesc:Special Weather Statement

WarningDate:6:00 PM AKDT on September 24, 2010

WarningSum:…Strong Winds Across Southcentral Alaska This Evening…

Warning Message:Strong northerly winds developed across southcentral Alaska today.
These winds are the result of a deep low pressure system which has
moved into the Gulf of Alaska…creating a steep pressure gradient
across the region and leading to strong northerly winds.
The highest winds are confined to the Matanuska Valley region…where
numerous reports of downed trees and associated power outages have
been received. The highest wind gust recorded so far in the valley
was 78 mph between Palmer and Wasilla.
However…sustained winds over
45 mph with gusts approaching 60 mph have occurred throughout the
Susitna Valley…Anchorage bowl…and coastal areas of the western
Kenai Peninsula. Reports of downed trees and power outages have been
reported in the Susitna Valley…Wasilla…and the city of Anchorage.
These strong winds should continue into the evening hours today
before tapering off overnight…though breezy conditions will persist
into Saturday. A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the
Anchorage area until midnight tonight and the Matanuska Valley until
4:00am tomorrow morning. Because many trees still have their
leaves…tree branches will be especially susceptible to breaking.
Loose items that could easily be blown around by the wind should be
secured immediately. Small planes should also be tied down to prevent
any damage due to the wind.
